Jackson Memorabilia Flood Internet

BBB Warns Of Potential Scams

Days following the death of Michael Jackson, Internet sites like Ebay and Craigslist are filling up with merchandise going to the highest bidder.

"What's going on now with the selling of everything Michael Jackson is unprecedented," said Megan Miller, from the Denver-Boulder Better Business Bureau.

From an autographed Thriller album going for $1,000, to an unused concert ticket priced at $750, to a circa 1980s doll offered for $500 by Ned DeRose, of Lakewood.

"I thought, ‘You know what? Let's try to sell it and see what happens, throw a number out there and see,’" said DeRose.

He said he’s not a hard core fan, but in a tight economy, sees it as an opportunity.

“$500 would sure help,” DeRose said.

Across town, Nicole Shivers dug the same doll out of a box at her mom's house and put it on Craigslist.

"We haven't listed it for anything in particular, we're hoping to get an offer," Shivers said.

She added if the doll sells, she hopes to use the money for an anniversary dinner with her husband, then make a donation to a charity Michael Jackson supported.

While both DeRose and Shiver have good intentions, the Better Business Bureau is warning of e-mail scams already popping up.

“You can tell often times if an e-mail is a scam just by the way it's written. Who is sending it to you can be vague," Miller said.

The Better Business Bureau offered tips to fans planning to buy memorabilia.

The information, released Monday, warned consumers of claims that items are “limited edition” or rare.

“Is the item truly unique and worth of its price, or has the price simply been jacked up because of current interest?” the released asked.

Fans are also advised to check a retailer’s rating on the Better Business Bureau Web site, and consider verifying autographs with a professional third party organization.

Amid the Michael mania, its still unclear if the merchandise will actually bring in the big bucks people are banking on.

7NEWS asked DeRose if he felt he could actually get his $500 asking price for his Michael Jackson doll.

“If I do that would be nice,” DeRose answered. “It'll make my week, it’ll make the rest of my summer."
