DENVER -- Thunderstorms erupted over the metro area once again on Thursday, causing flooding in several areas of the city. The heaviest storms pummeled central Denver and western Aurora. The biggest downpours were in the vicinity of the Fitzsimons Campus and Windsor Gardens, which received one to two inches of rain in less than an hour.Leetsdale and Oneida saw some of the worst flooding with roughly a half-dozen cars submerged.
The storms lingered into the evening and finally lightened up around 9 p.m.At Denver International Airport, the recent rounds of rain has boosted the June precipitation total at DIA to 4.49 inches. This pushes the June rainfall amount to nearly an inch and a third above average. So far, June 2009 is now the third-wettest on record. The wettest June on record for Denver was in 1882, when 4.96 inches of rain fell during the month. For the year to date, Denver has officially recorded 10.01 inches of precipitation. This figure is 2.20 inches above average for the year so far. Compare that figure to the 7.48 inches of total precipitation for all of 2002 -- Denver's driest year on record. We certainly seem to have emerged from the most recent drought. For more in-depth precipitation reports, check out the Community Collaborative Rain and Hail Study, also know as COCORAHS.
