Sever Weather Moves Through State Bringing Rain, Hail

UPDATED: 7:36 pm MDT June 13, 2009

The National Weather Service has issued a tornado warning for western Adams county and northeastern Denver county until 7:30 p.m. Saturday.

NWS Doppler Radar indicated a severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado over extreme southeastern Denver International Airport or 19 miles northeast of Denver.

No tornado has been seen.

The storm is moving northeast at 25 mph.

The NWS also issued a tornado warning for north central Powers county or 16 miles east of Lamar. That storm was headed east at 20 m.p.h.

The NWS said the warning will be in effect until 7:30 p.m. Saturday.

The safest place to be during a tornado is in a basement. Get under a workbench or other piece of sturdy furniture. If no basement is available, seek shelter on the lowest floor of the building in an interior hallway or room such as a closet. Use blankets or pillows to cover your body and always stay away from windows.

If in mobile homes or vehicles, evacuate them and get inside a substantial shelter. If no safe shelter is available, lie flat in the nearest ditch or other low spot and cover your head with your hands.

Hail and heavy rain have been reported from Fort Collins down to Aurora. Some areas briefly received pebble size hail.

Severe weather is possible in northeast Colorado for the rest of the evening. These storms are expected to produce heavy rain with golf ball size hail in some areas and strong winds. Also the threat of isolated tornadoes exists in eastern Colorado today, so as always keep an eye on the sky and take shelter when severe weather does strike.
