FIRESTONE, Colo. -- A Weld County judge has refused to lower bond for a Firestone man whose dog mauled his aunt on May 23.The victim, Myrna Lee, told 7NEWS that the dog should be put down."I thought it was my last day on earth," Lee said of the attack.
The woman had gone to her nephew's house and told him to turn down his radio."I don't know, it happened so quickly," she said. "He (the dog) just went after me."Lee said the dog, a boxer-shepherd mix named Scout, ripped her leg open."I tried to climb over the fence, but couldn't," she added. "I jumped on a planter and he started attacking me on the head, ripping the scalp and tearing my ears."Lee is recovering from her physical injuries, but she said she still struggles mentally with the attack."I'm lucky to be alive. I'm grateful for everyone who helped, the doctors and the person who called 911," she said. Now the big question is what happens to Scout. In May 2005, Scout got into a fight with another dog in a neighbor's yard.Scout's owner, David Riley, was found not guilty of owning a dangerous dog. Riley is facing a similar charge for his dog's attack on his aunt. His attorney, Eang Man, asked Judge Charles Unfug to lower the $15,000 bond so her client could pay Scout's impoundment fees.Unfug, citing Riley's history of prior offenses and history of failing to appear for court hearings, refused.Lee said Scout should be put down."Once an animal tastes blood he can't be fixed, in my opinion," she said.Lee said she has known Scout since he was a puppy. She said Riley didn't do a good job of raising the dog."He is not a responsible person to own a dog like that. If the dog had had a responsible owner, it would probably have been a very good dog," Lee said.Riley is due back in court July 9.The judge set a trial date for Aug. 26.
