3-Year-Old Who Drowned In SE Colo. Lake ID'd

Aubrey Thomas Disappeared While On Family Outing

POSTED: 4:44 am MDT June 9, 2009

A 3-year-old girl who drowned while playing at the edge of Holbrook Lake in Otero County has been formally identified.

Otero County Coroner Bob Fowler said the victim was Aubrey Jasmine Thomas of Swink, Colo.

Thomas was at the edge of the lake Sunday, playing with her brother near where the family was camped, according to a sheriff's report. The two were playing with an inflatable raft and adults in the family were alerted when they heard the girl's brother screaming for her.

A quick search of the lakeshore and shallow water turned up no sign of the girl. A 911 call for help was placed at 12:22 p.m. Volunteer searchers found her body in 4 feet of water, about 50 feet from the shore about 3 hours later.

Thomas was the daughter of Sam and Jeannie Thomas of Swink.
