64-Year-Old Woman Gets 3 Years For Killing Bicyclists

Barbara Thomas To Judge: 'Don't Take Me'

POSTED: 1:20 pm MDT June 8, 2009

A 64-year-old woman who uses a wheelchair and an oxygen tank begged a judge not to send her to prison after she was convicted of killing two bicyclists last year with her pickup.

Barbara Thomas was sentenced to three years in prison and was ordered to begin serving her sentence immediately, despite her pleas to be allowed to spend time with her family.

She pleaded with the judge, saying, "Oh my God. Don't take me," but Judge Gilbert A. Martinez said probation was not an appropriate sentence for killing two people.

Police said she was under the influence of morphine and barbiturates and was not wearing her required contact lenses when the accident happened.

Killed in the accident were Edgar "E.J." Juarez, 30, and Jayson Kilroy, 28.
