DURANGO, Colo. -- Federal agencies have begun recruiting wildland fighters in southwestern Colorado.
Applicants must be at least 18 years old, U.S. citizens and able
to pass a physical conditioning test. There is no upper age limit.
Pay varies from $8.90 per hour to $15.86 per hour, according to the Web site.
With the continued drought and fire risk already increasing, the
U.S. Forest Service and the Bureau of Indian Affairs are conducting
job fairs to round up seasonal wildland firefighters, said Ann
Bond, spokeswoman.
Jobs typically last from May into September.
"If the person is
a college student, they may get hired for the part of the summer
they are available," said Laurie Robison, fire prevention specialist with the San Juan Public Land Center.
To learn more about the requirements and to get a job application, go to the BLM and the Indian Affairs Dept.'s Web site.
