Student Riding On Hood Of Car Falls, Gets Run Over

Conifer High School Junior In Fair Condition

A Conifer High School student riding on the hood of a car fell off and was run over by another student in the senior parking lot Wednesday afternoon, the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office said.

The injured student, a junior at the school, has not been identified. A Flight For Life medical helicopter landed on the school's football field and airlifted the injured female to The Children's Hospital in Aurora, where she was listed in fair condition. The Colorado State Patrol, which is investigating the case, said the girl has moderate injuries.

Students at the school said another junior -- also a female -- was driving the vehicle involved in the accident.

Investigators said the girls were playing with a Frisbee when one of the girls tried to hang on to the hood of a gray Chevrolet Trailblazer while the vehicle was moving.

"She was holding on to the hood of the car. Her hands were up by the windshield. It sounds like she was on the hood of the car. I don't know if I would classify it as 'surfing,'" said CSP Trooper Ryan Sullivan.

Conifer High principal Dr. Mike Musick sent an e-mail to parents of students at the school that said the injured student was "responsive prior to being transported."

"She was able to communicate a little bit. It was tiring for her though. You can tell this was just plainly an accident. It's stupid choice-making," said student Ben Miani.

The CSP is questioning the driver and witnesses. The CSP is reviewing surveillance video of the accident. The driver could be charged with careless driving.

Seniors at Conifer graduated last Saturday but school is still in session through Thursday for the remaining students.

Several of the students were very critical of their injured classmate, and what they considered to be very risky behavior.

"You get in the back, usually, like, stand on the bumper. And if you fall off the back, you're not going to get hit by the car. This is the first time I heard someone riding on the front of the car," said student Adam Simonsen.
