3 People Found Dead In Boulder Home Identified

Police: Shooter Was Former Boulder Officer

Boulder authorities have identified the victims of a double-murder-suicide as a couple in their 60s and their son in his 20s.

The Boulder County coroner said Wednesday the victims are 63-year-old Elizabeth Schwarzenbach-Dileo, 61-year-old Philip F. Dileo and 23-year-old Philip C. Dileo. Autopsies were planned for Wednesday and Thursday.

The three were found dead in their Boulder home, in the 2400 block of Bluff Street, on Tuesday in what police called a "planned homicide-suicide."

Based on evidence at the scene, investigators believe Philip F. Dileo shot and killed his wife and son and then shot and killed himself. Based on witness accounts, investigators believe the shootings occurred sometime in the late morning on Monday.

Police recovered two guns. A Ruger .22 semiautomatic handgun with a silencer was found in the kitchen in the area of Elizabeth Schwarzenbach-Dileo's body. A second gun, a .357 Magnum revolver, was located upstairs near Philip F. Dileo's body. A note, spelling out Philip F. Dileo's desires for funeral arrangements, was located in a spare bedroom of the home.

Police said they have had one contact with this family before. In 2005, Elizabeth Schwarzenbach-Dileo came to the police department to talk with an officer about the legality of purchasing a gun because her husband had made threats against her. There are indications that he previously threatened their son, as well, police said.

In addition, the police department confirmed that Philip F. Dileo worked as a Boulder police officer for a brief period of time. Employment records show he was employed from October 1972 to June 1973 and again from October 1975 to November 1975. The records indicate he was terminated as a result of multiple violations of department policy.

Philip F. Dileo has no prior criminal history in Colorado. The couple was married in 1984 and there was no record of divorce.
