DENVER -- A 12-year-old boy was caught Wednesday morning trying to take an incendiary device through security screening at Denver International Airport, police said.Transportation Security Administration agents stopped the boy at about 6:45 a.m. Wednesday and called police. The Denver police bomb squad was then called to the airport to check it out."This appears to be an isolated incident and no planes or passengers were ever jeopardized," Denver police spokesman Sonny Jackson said. "People at DIA probably didn't even know there was an issue at DIA this morning."
Jackson said the device was similar to a flare and was homemade.Police don't know yet if the boy brought it to the airport intentionally or how it got in the boy's backpack.Officers say the juvenile, whose name was not released, was traveling with family members to California and missed his flight. The juvenile was arrested and will be charged with possession of an incendiary device, police said.Police called in the FBI to see if they wanted to be involved in the case, and they declined.
