COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- A new vending machine doesn't dispense soda, candy or chips. It dispenses prescription medications.Integrity Urgent Care in northeast Colorado Springs, recently installed a machine stocked with dozens of common prescriptions — antibiotics, painkillers, asthma inhalers and oral steroids, according to the Colorado Springs Gazette. The idea is to save patients the hassle of going to a pharmacy and having to wait in line for medicine, especially at night.
InstyMeds machine can hold 100 different drugs and from 8 to 22 bottles of each drug. The company's Web site said the machine is capable of labeling and dispensing nearly any form of medication including tablets, capsules, inhalers, sprays, creams and ointments, suspensions and syrups.Patient April Salladay, 32, she she got a prescription from a doctor at the clinic, entered a number on the machine, answered a couple of questions on a touch screen, and two minutes later retrieved her medicine from a bin. While the machine doesn't give a discount for insurance, some patients are willing to pay for the drug outright to avoid the extra stop at a pharmacy. Patients can pay with credit card, debit card or cash. There are 135 machines in the United States.
