COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- A Fort Carson soldier has been charged with manslaughter in the shooting death of a 19-year-old woman earlier this month.Army Spc. Thomas Woolly, 24, had his .45-caliber pistol in his hand because he and another man were fighting over Lisa Baumann, 19, according to an arrest affidavit obtained by the Gazette newspaper. He said the other man was trying to get into Baumann's apartment.Police were called to the residence around 3 a.m. on May 10 on a report of a shooting. They found Baumann with a fatal gunshot wound to the neck and a grazing bullet wound to Woolly's knee.
According to the affidavit, Woolly told police the argument died down and he was trying to uncock his handgun by pulling the trigger with his thumb on the hammer to release it slowly. He said his hands were sweaty and the hammer slipped, firing the round in the chamber, striking him and Baumann.Woolly also said that he was holding a drink in his other hand. He told police that even though he had been drinking prior to the shooting, alcohol wasn't a factor, the affidavit stated.Read more at the Gazette.com.
