Dog Taped To Fridge Gets New Name, Family

Humane Society Held Naming Contest For Dog

A dog who was taped to the side of a refrigerator during a domestic dispute has been given a new name and a new family.

The Shiba Inu was given to the Boulder Humane Society after being taken away from its owner, Bryan Beck.

Police said Beck's girlfriend Abby Toll used tape and rubber bands to wrap up Beck's dog Rex after it made a mess on the carpet. Police said they noticed a big ball of tape stuck on the side of the refrigerator when they arrived.

"The ball of tape appeared to be moving," said Sarah Huntley of the Boulder Police department. "The officer asked the individuals what it was and the female replied it was a dog."

The shelter told the Boulder Daily Camera newspaper that the shelter got requests from families as far away as New York, California and Wisconsin — all of them willing to drive to Colorado to pick Rex up and provide a home for him.

The shelter decided to hold a naming contest and give the dog a new home.

Lisa Pedersen, CEO for the Humane Society of Boulder Valley, said the winning name was Yoshi and he has been adopted by a family that took care of him after the fridge incident.

Over the last few weeks they have fostered Yoshi and worked with the Humane Society of Boulder Valley’s training staff to help with his transition into a new family, Pedersen said.

“We are very happy with the outcome of this story. We couldn’t have asked for a better situation for this special dog where he will receive the love and support he so deserves,” said Pedersen.

The naming contest was the Park’s idea. They wanted to give the community the opportunity to be involved and hoped to raise funding for other animals like Yoshi.

“Yoshi means good luck, and the Parks have certainly changed the luck of this dog by giving him a loving home,” said Pedersen.

Toll has been charged with felony animal cruelty in the incident with the dog. She's also been charged with third-degree assault and tampering in connection with the argument with Beck.
