DOW Tracks Bear Near Highlands Ranch

Authorities Say Bear Will Likely Leave On Its Own

UPDATED: 11:05 pm MDT May 13, 2009

Authorities sent out a community alert to people livening in Highlands Ranch after a bear was seen in the area Wednesday afternoon.

Several residents in Highlands Ranch reported seeing a bear at the intersection of University Boulevard and Colorado Boulevard.

A deputy and a child both reported seeing the bear just southwest of that intersection.

Authorities sent out an emergency alert asking residents to stay inside and keep pets inside while the bear is found.

The alert said: "A bear has been seen in the area. At this time it is not threatening. Please bring your pets and children inside and stay inside your home. The Division of Wildlife is responding now and the Douglas County Deputies are currently following the bear."

However, authorities said as of 4:30 p.m., they found the bear and believe it was resting in a ravine.

7NEWS reporter Christin Ayers said a crowd has gathered to see the bear, but it appears to be hidden in the brush.

DOW officials said the bear will likely walk out of the area on its own later Wednesday night. They said they know where the bear is and will monitor it.
