Contest Will Rename Abused Dog

'Rex' Found Taped To Fridge In Boulder

POSTED: 10:09 am MDT May 13, 2009

Rex, the dog police found taped to a fridge last month, is getting a new family and a new name.

The Shiba Inu is being adopted by a couple in Castle Rock this week. They've decided to let the public help rename Rex.

"There has been so much public support," Amy Park told the Boulder Daily Camera newspaper. "There are blogs and Web pages and even a Facebook support group for him, so we wanted people to have a part in his new beginning."

To help rename Rex, visit the Boulder Humane Society Web site. For a suggested donation of $5, you can vote online for one of five names, all based on the Shiba Inu's Japanese heritage:

  • Yoshi (Good luck)
  • Kichiro (Lucky Son)
  • Toshi (Bright, intelligent)
  • Saburo (Third son)
  • Kazuki (Harmonious hope)

The newspaper reported that Yoshi is leading so far. The contest has raised more than $500 for the Humane Society of Boulder Valley.

You may remember Boulder police found Rex taped to a fridge when they responded to a domestic dispute in April.

Abby Toll, 20, was charged with felony animal cruelty. Rex's owner, Bryan Beck, 21, was ticketed on suspicion of misdemeanor cruelty and surrendered Rex and another dog, a Chihuahua named Peanut.
