Prom Date Fails 'Smell Test', Brighton HS Senior Misses Dance

Administrators, Police Say Date Smelled Like Marijuana; Date Has Permit To Smoke

Brighton High School senior Sarah Heideman said she unfairly missed her high school prom after she and her date were unfairly accused of being high.

Heideman said she and her date were stopped at the doors of Wings Over The Rockies, in Denver, where the event was held Saturday.

She said a school resource officer told them the principal, John Biner, smelled pot on Heideman's date, Jason Schweinsberg, 20, and they could not go inside and called police.

"It was humiliating," said Heideman.

When Denver police arrived Schweinsberg said he was licensed to use medicinal marijuana for treatment of pain associated with spinal meningitis and injuries from a car crash. Schweinsberg said he showed police his permit.

"I showed the officer the permit and he was very rude to me. It was like he didn't care about her prom," said Schweinsberg.

Schweinsberg told police he had medicated earlier that morning but was not high and both said they consented to a pat down and vehicle search. Marijuana was never located.

"They could have given us a chance. Don't judge a book by its cover," said Schweinsberg.

Adams County 27J school district said Heideman was allowed into the dance, her date, Schweinsberg, was the one told to leave.

They said they were looking out for the safety of the students and left the decision up to Denver police.

Janet Wyatt, the district's legal counsel said she didn't believe the district had a policy on medicinal marijuana.

Why police felt Schweinsberg was a threat to student safety is still unclear. A Denver police representative said they were looking into it.
