GOLDEN, Colo. -- A 17-year-old boy from Arvada has pleaded guilty to criminally negligent homicide in the death of a skateboarder being towed by the teen's car. The 17-year-old, whose name wasn't released because he is a juvenile, pleaded guilty Wednesday and is scheduled to be sentenced June 24. Prosecutors say the teen was driving a Ford Mustang while his 16-year-old friend Ryan Bailey was "skitching," or skateboarding and holding on to the door Feb. 25. Bailey somehow lost his grip, was hit by the Mustang and died of his injuries.
Both teens attended Ralson Valley high school in Arvada.Police there say skitching has led to the deaths of two teenagers in the last six months.“We strongly encourage parents to talk to their teens about the danger this activity presents. Skitching is not new, but is far more dangerous today considering our sleek, faster cars and busy roadways,” said Jefferson County District Attorney Scott Storey. “This is a tragedy and it affects everyone in the community.”Sentencing for the teenager is June 24 but the DA's office believes probation is likely.
