DENVER -- A 6-foot wide sinkhole closed the eastbound lanes of Interstate 70 near Rifle, officials said Thursday.Colorado Department of Transportation maintenance workers found the hole around 7 p.m. Wednesday.Officials closed the eastbound lanes and diverted traffic onto US 6, said CDOT spokeswoman Nancy Shanks.
The original hole was 6 feet wide and 8 inches deep. Thursday, crews excavated a 35-foot wide, 8-foot deep hole so crews could examine the subsurface and make sure there were no other voids, Shanks said.Workers believe a 20-inch gas pipeline underneath the highway may have caused the hole to form. Crews will use high-pressure grouting equipment to fill the voids, she said. One lane of I-70 was reopened Thursday night and officials said they hoped to finish their work sometime next week.
