If You Get Stopped By A Non-Uniformed Police Officer
Safety Tips Provided By Police For Your Protection
Following the story of the abduction and killing of 20-year-old Lacy Miller may make you reluctant to stop for non-uniformed police officers in unmarked cars.
In an effort to provide you with some comfort in traffic stops, Fort Collins Police, the Larimer County Sheriff's Office, the Colorado State University Police, and the Colorado State Patrol offer the following tips and guidelines to follow if you do not feel safe when stopped by a plain-clothes police officer driving an unmarked car.
-
Drive the speed limit to a well-lit area with people present and stop your car. Do not roll down your window or open your car doors.
Tell the officer you are afraid and that you would like to see his/her identification. Do this through the closed window and speak up so the officer can hear you.
Ask the officer to have a marked unit respond to verify that the contact is legitimate.
