DENVER -- The swine flu outbreak has more people asking questions about flu.In Colorado, the typical influenza season typically lasts through April.The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment reported that flu activity in Colorado most recently was "sporadic."
The number of flu cases in Colorado has been dropping this month. For the week ending April 4, there were 27 influenza cases in Colorado. The following week ending April 11, the number of cases dropped to 14. And by the week ending in April 18, the number of new cases was down to nine, according to the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment.During the 2008-2009 flu season, 509 Coloradans have been hospitalized. Four children have died. Colorado does not keep track of all flu cases, only the number of patients hospitalized for flu.In Colorado this year, 35.6 percent of the cases have been in children 4 years old and younger. The next largest group of hospitalizations was people 60 and older, they make up 24.2 percent of Colorado's flu cases. And 14 percent of hospitalizations have been Coloradans between the ages of 18 and 39 showing that flu hits a wide variety of age groups.The 2007-2008 flu season in Colorado was greater than the previous two season. In 2007-2008, 1,004 people were hospitalized for flu in Colorado. There were two pediatric deaths.
