Thousands Still Without Power After Snow Storm

POSTED: 10:19 am MDT April 19, 2009

Utility workers are trying to restore power to thousands of homes that have been without electricity since this weekend's snowstorm.

Xcel Energy spokesman Joe Fuentes said 8,200 customers in Evergreen lacked electricity, while 800 homes in Denver and 1,500 in Boulder also don't have power.

Fuentes said crews worked through the night Saturday and are working Sunday morning to restore power to everyone.

Residents of Conifer and Fairplay lost power when a tree fell on a power line that feds those communities.

The storm that swept into Colorado Friday dropped as much as 52 inches in the foothills west of Denver. The metro area got between 3 to 10 inches of snow.

The weather also prompted the closure of an 80-mile stretch of Interstate 70 Friday night, forcing hundreds of travelers to spend the night at American Red Cross shelters.
