More than one million children are abused and neglected each year in the United States. 9,000 of them live in Colorado.

Denver’s 7 has teamed up with the Kempe Foundation in April for National Child Abuse Prevention Month. This week’s 7Everyday Hero helps abused and neglected children year-round.

Sister Michael Allegri volunteers at the Kempe Foundation. Over the past ten years, she has served as a foster parent for 46 children - most have been abused or neglected.

"Sister Michael is always the person who steps up to the plate and says, ‘Give that little person to me, because I believe I can help them,’" said Terri James-Banks.

"These are kids who have been hurt. They have been traumatized by no fault of their own. And unless we get in there and show them and help them and teach them - that's not the way they're going to have to live their life forever - their lives would not change. So, we can turn lives around for kids," said Sister Michael.
