State Auto Dealers Push For President’s Plan, Warn Of Ripple Effect

Opponents Say Bailout Not The Answer

Randy Vocke doesn’t have anything against domestic automakers,

“I’ve always driven Fords, always liked Ford pick-ups,” said Vocke.

The Arvada resident said he simply doesn’t like the idea of another multi-billion dollar industry bailout.

General Motors and Chrysler have already been handed more than $17 billion in federal loans.

“If they made bad choices, that’s the choices they made. If they go bankrupt, they go bankrupt,” he said.

But Colorado car dealers argue that a bankrupt General Motors or Chrysler would have a devastating ripple effect on the state’s financial institutions and the economy.

“We have over 30,000 people in this state that work for retail automobile dealers,” said John Medved, president of Medved Autoplexes. “The ramifications (of failed automakers) are astronomical.”

It could also have an impact on people who drive G.M.- or Chrysler-made vehicles, whose warranties and trade-in values would be in jeopardy if the automakers fail.

“If you look at everything the administration is proposing, though, you could call it ‘bankruptcy light,’” said Tim Jackson, president of the Colorado Auto Dealers Association. “It gets the changes that are necessary, but prevents the failure of the auto industry.”

President Barack Obama will reveal the details of the auto industry bailout plan Monday, but Jackson said it will take time to address all the problems.

“They say they want to turn a company around. It’s like a big ship in a very small waterway, it’s not easily turned around,” said Jackson.

Arizona Senator John McCain has said the bailout would be a gross misuse of taxpayer money.

He said that the companies should be allowed to go into bankruptcy and emerge more competitive.
