Storm Conditions Improve, But It's Still Slow Going

8-15 Inches In Denver, Up To 2 Feet In Foothills

UPDATED: 4:02 am MDT March 27, 2009

Call it the snow-pocalypse, the March Blizzard 2009 or the Spring Storm. Whatever you call it, it has been a storm to remember.

Light snow will continue to fall in the Denver Metro Area through Friday morning. Up to two inches of new snow will fall between Midnight and 8:00 a.m. along the I-25 Corridor, bringing totals up to a foot-and-a-half in some areas.

Temperatures will be in the low to mid teens with wind chills around -5 degrees as commuters begin their morning drive. Roads will be icy and snowpacked so unnecessary travel is discouraged. If you do decide to drive, prepare for a slow crawl into the downtown area.

The Front Range will be under a WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY until 6 a.m. Friday. Winds will be from the north at 15-30 mph and will continue to produce blowing and drifting snow.

The snow started early Thursday morning - heavy at first from Fort Collins to Boulder. Throughout the day the heaviest snow gradually moved farther to the southeast. The worst of the storm had shifted to the southeast quarter of Colorado by Midnight, with blizzard conditions expected to continue in the southeast through Noon on Friday.

Current Snow Totals

As of Midnight.

  • 20 inches -- Buckhorn Mountain
  • 17 inches -- Westminster, Loveland
  • 16 inches -- Crested Butte, Sunlight
  • 16 inches -- Boulder, Genesee, Lakewood
  • 15 inches -- Evergreen, Broomfield
  • 14 inches -- Wheat Ridge, Fairplay
  • 14 inches -- Broomfield
  • 14 inches -- Winter Park
  • 14 inches -- Golden, Loveland, Erie
  • 14 inches -- Thornton, Aurora
  • 13 inches -- Copper Mountain, Aspen
  • 12 inches -- Greeley
  • 12 inches -- Nederland, Arvada, Niwot
  • 12 inches -- Longmont
  • 12 inches -- Lafayette
  • 12 inches -- Fort Collins
  • 10 inches -- 7NEWS Studios, Denver

The snow totals have varied even within the same community. The strong winds have created so much blowing and drifting that it has been hard to get consistent readings - so you may have more or less in your yard than the reading listed.

Travel on the roads is HIGHLY DISCOURAGED through early Friday, especially east and south of Denver. Expect hazardous driving conditions all over the state, but particularly on the southeastern plains.

A BLIZZARD WARNING is in effect for the southeast quarter of the state. The warning extends to Midnight Friday for the extreme southeast.

Very windy conditions will continue to cause blowing and drifting snows over the eastern plains, with strong wind gusts for as high as 40 mph expected.

We have missed most of the storms this season, but this storm did not miss the Denver area. The low pressure center of the storm crossed central and southeastern Colorado and put Denver and the northeastern plains in the prime location for heavy snow.

Prior to this storm, Denver had only recorded 18.8 inches of snowfall. The record for the least snowy winter is 20.8 inches set back in 1888-89. This storm has nudged us out of the record books for a dry winter in Denver.

The storm track has now shifted and it looks like we may have another system ready to bring snowfall to the Front Range. The storm track for this system will move it through Colorado late Sunday and on Monday. The track of this next storm should bring it into central Colorado - another good position to bring snow to the Metro Area.

The snow in the high country has been welcome news as the recent warm weather thinned the snowpack. The storm has pushed the average snowpack back above normal across the mountains. A WINTER STORM WARNING will be in effect for the Southwest, Central, and Northern Mountains until 6:00 a.m. Friday. The warning will remain in effect for the Sangre De Cristos until 6:00 p.m.
