Climber Injured After 50-Foot Clear Creek Canyon Fall

Man Was Not Wearing A Helmet

POSTED: 5:04 am MDT March 18, 2009

An unidentified climber was recovering from his injuries Wednesday after he fell 40 to 50 feet in Clear Creek Canyon and had to be rescued.

The Golden Fire Department conducted a technical rescue of the victim at about 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, just west of Tunnel 2 after receiving multiple reports of a fallen climber.

According to the Fire Department, the man fell while conducting a technical climb with friends on a vertical rock face. He was not wearing a climbing helmet.

It took rescuers about an hour to get him down from the area where he fell. He was transported by ambulance to a local hospital with serious, but apparently non-life-threatening injuries.

"The Golden Fire Department would like to remind anyone who is participating in a potentially hazardous activity to always wear your protective safety equipment. This includes helmets for anyone involved in a sport that could result in a fall such as mountain biking, horseback riding, paragliding, kayaking or rock climbing," a press release stated.
