BAILEY, Colo. -- A truck carrying 40,000 pounds of potatoes rolled on U.S. Highway 285, spilling its load on the side of the highway and into the North Fork of the South Platte River. The driver of the truck, identified Wednesday by the Colorado State Patrol as 51-year-old Ronald Cole, of Longmont, was not injured in the Tuesday evening rollover. The rollover was reported at about 5 p.m., near mile marker 214, between Bailey and Grant.
About a dozen people have been picking up potatoes since early Wednesday morning.Denver Water was called because the spill occurred into a waterway used as a main source of water for the metro area. Water crews used a boon to prevent more potatoes from spilling into the South Platte River, said Denver Water spokeswoman Stacey Chesney. The Division of Wildlife was also called to the wreck to check if the crash affected the trout in the stream. It did not.Traffic on Highway 285 was not impacted by the rollover.
