Motorcyclist Dies Fleeing From DUI Stop

Female Passenger Injured When Cycle Crashes

POSTED: 5:46 am MDT March 17, 2009

A Colorado Springs man died when he attempted to flee from a traffic stop, the Colorado State Patrol said Tuesday.

According to troopers, a Colorado State Patrol DUI enforcement car attempted a traffic stop on a motorcycle in Colorado Springs Monday night. The driver sped away, pursued by the trooper.

The motorcycle reached speeds of 95 mph during the pursuit, according to the state patrol. The chase was called off but the motorcycle was spotted a few minutes later.

The motorcycle failed to negotiate a turn, striking a curb and ejecting the driver and his passenger. Both people were taken to Penrose Hospital, where the driver was later pronounced dead.

The state patrol identified the driver as William Lee Campbell, 41. Maria Renee Campbell, also 41, was undergoing treatment for her injuries Tuesday and was in serious condition.

Troopers said neither person was wearing a helmet and alcohol is suspected as a factor in the crash.
