Coloradans Bet On Jobs As Dealers

Casino Classes Busy

Changes to Colorado’s gaming laws have brought an increased interest to Denver area casino schools.

Micky Lee Skaggs, Director at the Bartending and Casino College said the economy has many people shuffling jobs.

"I've got a lot of people changing their careers; most are being laid off from their permanent jobs," Skaggs said.

He pointed to the recent rise in students. A class that, up until a few months ago, was taught once every two months, is now offered four days a week, he said.

"A lot people are looking to supplement their income,” Skaggs added.

Also fueling this interest is the recently passed Amendment 50.

The new state law, taking effect July 2, allows Craps and Roulette games, extended hours and higher betting limits.

The changes are expected to bring increased jobs to gambling communities like Black Hawk and Central City.

Kiril Tishkov attended his first class Monday night. He’s trying his hand at Poker and Blackjack for a bit of extra income.

"I work for a management company full-time and the part time job would be dealing cards just for fun," Tishkov said.

Skaggs told 7NEWS graduates through his training program are certified through the state of Colorado’s Board of Higher Education.

Tuition ranges between $299 and $699, Skaggs said. Graduates are then required to obtain a gaming license from the Colorado Dept. of Revenue.

He added his courses offer practice for the dealer “audition” applicants will have when they approach Colorado’s casinos for a job.

"Along with an interview, (casinos) make sure you have the skills they need," he said.

A couple other dealer training schools told 7NEWS they’re in business thanks to Amendment 50.

“I feel very optimistic about the months ahead,” said Steve Kane, from the Casino Dealer School of Colorado.
