March 1, 2009: Local Teacher Helps Homeless And Hungry Seniors Feel At Home

7Everyday Hero Started Meal Program At Senior Support Services

The clients who visit Senior Support Services in Denver are treated like family, and this week's 7Everyday Hero is part of the reason why.

"We make sure everyone has a meal and when we do it's not just about serving food - it's about serving love, hospitality and friendship - so that's why it's important," said Rita Niblack.

Senior Support Services is a non-profit that serves homeless and hungry seniors. About ten years ago, Rita Niblack decided these people needed a hot meal at the end of the day. She was able to convince local churches to buy and prepare dinner five days a week.

"It's a Herculean feat and we owe her a huge debt of gratitude," said Ted Pascoe, Executive Director of Senior Support Services. Niblack teaches at Mullen High School all day, but still manages the meal program - and even helps serve the food.

"She's been more than a cornerstone, she has done great by bringing meals down - and she does anything a person asks," said one of the center's clients.
