Woman Pleads Insanity In Burning Death Of Her Dog
Tanya Martin Will Be Examined At State Mental Hospital
POSTED: 11:10 am MST February 23, 2009
GOLDEN, Colo. -- A Lakewood woman accused of killing her dog by tying him up on a hot stove has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity. A judge on Monday ordered 38-year-old Tanya Martin to undergo an evaluation at the state Mental Health Institute in Pueblo. Prosecutors said Martin put the 6-year-old Yorkshire terrier named Bobo on top of a burning telephone book on a lighted stove in October. The dog suffered second- and third-degree burns to 50 percent of his body and died from his injuries a few days later.
Martin faces charges with arson and aggravated animal cruelty. Jefferson County district attorney's spokeswoman Pam Russell said Martin is free on $10,000 bail and has been told to report to the state hospital when a bed becomes available, expected in two or three weeks.
