WESTMINSTER, Colo. -- A Westminster firefighter who just graduated from paramedic school helped deliver and save a baby's life Wednesday.Courtney VanMarter works for the Westminster Fire Department and graduated from paramedic school two weeks ago.Her crew from Station 1 got an emergency call at 3:30 a.m. on Feb. 11.
When they arrived at the house on Fenton Circle, firefighters found a woman on the bedroom floor who said her water had broken."After a quick examination, Paramedic Courtney VanMarter determined delivery was imminent, so we set up in the bedroom for child birth," said Westmister Fire Lt. Jayson Sale.Fire department officials said the delivery was especially dramatic because VanMarter realized the umbilical cord was tightly wrapped around the baby's neck.VanMarter told the mom to quit pushing while she removed the umbilical cord from the newborn's neck. Then mom, with help from firefighters, delivered the baby. The father reports that mom and the new baby boy are healthy and well and recuperating at a local hospital.Just two weeks ago, Westminster firefighters from Station 2 delivered a baby on the side of U.S. Highway 36.
