A woman who was followed from a light rail station, beaten with a baseball bat, sexually assaulted and then robbed can now put a name to her attacker's face, the district attorney announced Monday.

Denver District Attorney Mitch Morrissey said 16-year-old Shakiel Madden-Vaughn is responsible for the brutal Jan. 24 assault and also responsible for two other attacks in that same week in the same neighborhood.

Madden-Vaughn was charged as an adult with attempted first-degree murder, sexual assault, first-degree assault and aggravated robbery.

The 40-year-old victim was walking home from the Dayton light rail station in the 9000 block of East Mansfield Avenue, when she was attacked, Morrissey said.

She was hit repeatedly with a baseball bat and beaten so brutally, she nearly died, Morrissey said. Her attacker then ran off with her purse, police said.

Madden-Vaughn is already facing charges as an adult in two other attacks, involving an 69-year-old woman and a 12-year-old girl.

On Jan. 19, he approached a 12-year-old girl at a playground in the area of the 9000 block of east Mansfield Avenue, grabbed her and fondled her, Morrissey said.

Two days later, he came up behind a 69-year-old woman on Mansfield Avenue and hit her numerous times in the back of the head with a brick, police.

Police believe all the attacks were random.

Madden-Vaughn remains in custody in the Denver County Jail.
