Don Champion joined 7News in January 2009 as a Reporter/Producer. He comes to Denver from Jackson, Miss. where he worked at WAPT-TV as Weekend Anchor and Reporter.

Prior to Jackson, Don also worked as Weekend Anchor at KSNT-TV in Topeka, Kan. and at WBAL-TV in Baltimore as a producer. In 2008, Don was awarded an Associated Press award for his non-stop coverage of Hurricane Gustav along the Gulf Coast. While in Jackson he also helped cover the historic recovery effort in the wake of Hurricane Katrina and heavily covered city politics.

A Washington, D.C. native, Don spent part of his childhood growing up in Germany. While attending Towson University in Baltimore, he worked at Black Entertainment Television as on-air talent for the award winning talk show Teen Summit.

Community involvement is important to Don. He’s spent much of his time mentoring the next generation of journalists and volunteering with community groups. Here in Denver he sits on the Board of Directors for the non-profit Taking Our Youth Back. The group serves as a mentoring program to inner city and at-risk youth. Don is also a proud member of the National Association of Black Journalists.

In his free time Don enjoys attending concerts at Denver’s great jazz clubs, traveling, spending time with family and friends, exercising, and can’t wait to hit the many ski slopes of Colorado.
