4-Year-Old Strangled In Trampoline Netting

Denver Boy In Foster Home Found By Younger Sister

A 4-year-old boy from Denver died Friday afternoon when he became entangled in trampoline netting at his foster home in Colorado Springs.

The boy was found about 12:05 p.m. by his 3-year-old sister at a home in the 1900 block of Wooten Road. That is near the intersection of Palmer Park and Powers Boulevard.

Colorado Springs police Lt. Brian Ritz said the foster mother said she was making lunch around noon and sent the younger girl out to get her brother. The girl went out and came back to say her brother wouldn't come in. The foster mother said she went out and found the boy with his head caught in a loop, slumped on the trampoline.

The mother attempted CPR to revive the boy while emergency crews responded.

Ritz said the boy got his head stuck in a cord hanging from some safety netting surrounding the trampoline and choked to death.

"We have no indication that this is anything more than an accident, but an investigation is under way," Ritz said.

Neighbors said the boy and his sister had been placed in the home only a few weeks ago.

Ritz said the boy and his sister were placed in the foster home through Options Inc., a Colorado Springs placement agency that is licensed by the state Department of Human Services.

The El Paso County Department of Human Services will investigate the death and determine if the girl should remain in the home, authorities said.

Gail Jones of Options Inc. said the organization has received no previous complaints about the foster mother.

"It was a horrible accident, period," she said.

Consumerreports.org listed trampolines as the No. 1 product not to buy for kids. In 2003, some 98,000 trampoline-related injuries resulted in emergency room visits, according to the federal Consumer Product Safety Commission. At least six deaths have been reported since 1990.
