Dog Attacks Mar Pitkin Nordic Skiing Event

ASPEN, Colo. -- Two cross-country skiers were attacked by dogs in separate incidents during the Town to Town Tour in Pitkin County over the weekend, authorities said.The Nordic skiing event goes from Aspen To Basalt.One dog attacked and bit a man, while another male skier was forced to fend off an attack with a ski pole, the Aspen Daily News reported Monday.
Both attacks occurred on the Rio Grand Trail, in Pitkin County Open Space.A ranger told the Aspen newspaper that it appeared both dogs were on private property and left it to attack the skiers.The skier who was bitten opted to continue the ski tour to Basalt, even though he had scratches and torn pants.The German shepherd will be quarantined for 10 days to check for rabies. A deputy told the newspaper that the owner wasn’t home at the time but will be ticketed.The dog’s owner is the founder of Wienerschnitzel, a fast-food chain that specializes in hot dogs.The second dog attack involved a pit bull. The skier who was charged said he used his ski pole to ward off the attacking dog, getting his ski pool crunched in the process.Read the full story in the Aspen Daily News.
