Two women in this taxi were killed while on their way to Denver International Airport.

Truck Driver Arrested After Women In Taxi Killed

Women Were Heading To Airport When Freedom Taxi Crashed

UPDATED: 6:21 pm MST January 28, 2009

A woman who is accused of causing a Freedom Taxi minivan to roll off the road, ejecting two passengers and killing them, is now in police custody.

Sandra Lee Jacobson, 40, was arrested Wednesday after her truck was spotted in the the Denver International Airport cargo area, said Denver police spokesman Sonny Jackson. Jacobson is suspected of driving under the influence and is being held for investigation of two counts of vehicular homicide and one count of vehicular assault.

The victims -- two women from out of town -- were on their way to the airport when a truck struck their purple Freedom Taxi minivan on northbound Pena Boulevard near 56th Avenue, police said.

The two victims were ejected as the van rolled off the road and into a field. One of the women was pronounced dead at the scene and the other was transported to University Hospital where she died.

The taxi driver was transported to Denver Health Medical Center with nonlife-threatening injuries.

Witnesses told police that the taxi was struck by a white pickup truck, and thanks to a very astute witness, officers located a vehicle matching that description in a cargo area not far from the crash scene.

Investigators tracked down the driver and passenger of that truck. Jacobson was transported to the Denver City Jail.

The accident happened about 10:30 a.m. and shut down northbound Pena until almost 2 p.m.

The identification of the victims will be released after their family has been notified.
