DENVER -- Within minutes of stepping off a bus, an 18-year-old woman dropped a special package at the downtown Denver library -- a baby."We had a little bit of a library miracle here (Tuesday)," said Thomas Scott, manager of security at the library.Dominique Trevino walked off the Regional Transportation District bus at about 9 a.m. and asked for help, he said. She looked distressed and told a library employee she was not feeling well. It was immediately apparent she was going into labor, Scott said.
Security guards helped guide Trevino to the side of the main foyer and laid down jackets on the floor for her as first responders were called."We were about half way there and our notes showed the mother's water had broken," said Greg Sheehan, a Denver firefighter."We figured out shortly, we were going to deliver there and then," said Lt. Randall Wells, who was also on the crew from Station 8.Scott said the Trevino delivered a healthy girl 13 minutes after she walked through the library doors. Tervino and her daugher were taken to the hospital to be checked out.Trevino talked to the media Wednesday morning. She and Sariah Unique Trevino were given lifetime library cards by the Denver Public Library. It was Trevino's second child. She gave birth to her first two years ago.Scott and other library employees say they are excited about the library's new card holder. It is the first time a baby has been born at the library.Trevino said she was on the way to a doctor appointment when Sariah wanted to enter the world.Scott said library personnel are extremely proud of the way employees responded quickly to the emergency and how library patrons gave the woman privacy. The crew from Station 8 said they will not soon forget the baby girl who couldn’t wait to check out the library.Butler said, "She'll have a good story to tell the rest of her life, there's no doubt about that."
Mother Delivers Along Road
Pregnant, out of gas and stuck along U.S. 36.Video: Woman Gives Birth Along HighwayOther than that, Monday was a breeze for 19-year-old Casandra Garcia. But that breeze came with 0 degree temperatures and icy roads at 11:30 p.m. Monday near the Church Ranch exit. That's where her 1989 Jeep Cherokee had finally come to rest, running totally out of gas a half mile earlier.“My gas gauge is broken on my vehicle. So, we thought we had enough gas in there,” said Casandra Garcia, beaming new mom.She and her new son, Daniel "DJ" Lee-Hurtado, Jr. were ready to leave Exempla Good Samaritan Hospital in Lafayette Wednesday night.“We had the emergency flashers on. The roads were icy. So I was praying that nobody would slide and hit us. Or that nothing happened and luckily, nothing did,” Garcia said. She was with other family members in the back seat.An ambulance from the Westminster Fire Department arrived minutes later and helped Garcia decide maybe delivering in the passenger seat of the Jeep wasn't the best idea.So in the back of the ambulance, with doors opening and closing from time to time, Garcia quickly gave birth to her second child.“I was relieved. I was afraid. I didn’t want to deliver in my car for when nit was freezing outside. The heat wasn’t working because, no gas,” Garcia said.It was a thrill for firefighter and EMT Jake Lieser to see mom and baby again at the hospital under less stressful conditions.“Right after he delivered he let out a big, big cry said, hey, here I am. So it’s good the hear that he’s been quiet. Hehe,” Lieser said.Copyright 2009 by TheDenverChannel.com. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten or redistributed.
