A Denver keyboardist for the popular Colorado jam band Leftover Salmon is accused of drugging and sexually assaulting a woman he had met at a New Year's Eve party.

William McKay, 39, was arrested Tuesday afternoon at his home in Denver, Eagle County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Shannon Cordingly said.

The investigation began on Jan. 9 when a woman called the Eagle County Sheriff's Office saying that she believed she had been drugged and sexually assaulted after a New Year's Eve party.

She identified McKay as the suspect and said he attended the party after his Billy McKay Band played at the Riverwalk in Edwards on New Year’s Eve.

After officers investigated the woman's claim, they requested a warrant for McKay on charges of sexual assault, Cordingly said.

McKay is currently being held without bond at the Eagle County Detentions Facility.

"Parties, bars, and nightclubs are prime breeding grounds for acts of violence, assault, and sexual assault," the Eagle County Sheriff's Office warned in a news release.

Police issued these safety tips to prevent date rape:
  • Always get your own drink and watch it being poured.
  • Never leave your drink unattended.
  • Keep in mind that most drugs used to spike a drink are colorless and tasteless; therefore, keeping your drink within sight is vital.
  • Drugs can be slipped into both alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks at parties or in bars without a person knowing.
  • Be alert to the behavior of your friends. If a friend appears disproportionately intoxicated in relation to the amount of alcohol the friend had consumed, the person's drink might have been tampered with.
