DENVER -- A woman and her boyfriend will stand trial in the scalding death of the woman's 2-year-old son after a detective testified that one of the boy's siblings told authorities he "got a fire" in the bathtub. The testimony came Monday during the couple's preliminary hearing on charges of first-degree murder for November death of Elijah Archuleta. Prosecutors say Isela Reyes-Talamantes and John Vigil waited at least nine hours before taking the child to the hospital and ran errands during that time.Reyes-Talamantes cried and trembled during the hearing when a detective recounted how her 4-year-old daughter said "John John got a fire on Elijah."
Vigil's attorney says the couple tried to help the youngster by treating his burns with ointment and cold water. Receipts from the couple indicate they made a number of stops, including a restaurant, before taking the injured boy to the hospital.Court documents indicate the boy had been burned over 75 percent of his body.
