Investigators To Move Wrecked Jet Thursday

POSTED: 2:09 pm MST December 29, 2008

Federal investigators hope to soon move the wreckage of a jet that went off the runway at the Denver airport.

The National Transportation Safety Board says the Continental Airlines plan will be moved to another part of the Denver International Airport grounds on New Year's Day. The plane is still in the ravine where it landed after veering off a runway, hurtling over a taxiway and access road and sliding down an embankment Dec. 20.

A fire burned most of the plane's right side. It's unclear when the fire started. Thirty-eight of 115 people on board were injured.

Federal investigators are awaiting special cranes needed to move the wreckage. They want to get a look at the jet's nose gear to determine if it malfunctioned, forcing the jet off the runway. The nose gear is underneath the plane.

Federal investigators are trying to determine what caused the accident. They have inspected the wreckage and interviewed passengers and crew members, including the pilot.
