The shell of the home is all that remains after it was gutted by a predawn fire.

Fire Engulfs Jeffco Home, Family Escapes

Structure In Homestead Subdivision A Total Loss

A huge fire engulfed a home in rural Jefferson County early Wednesday, but seven family members in the house managed to escape safely.

The location is between Morrison and Conifer, just off U.S. Highway 285, near Windy Point.

The first reports of a fire came in at 5:42 a.m., when one of Frank Maixner's teenagers woke up and saw the fire on the outside of the home. She alerted the rest of the family and they all fled.

The two-story, 2,200-square-foot home at 8690 Creek Trail was fully engulfed when volunteer firefighters arrived. Three nearby vehicles parked outside were also burning. Three others were saved.

Maxiner said his five kids were in the home when the fire broke out. Three are teenagers, one is home from college and the other is home from serving in the Marines. All got out safely.

The home is located very near an Inter-Canyon Fire sub-station. Mutual aid was requested from other nearby fire departments.

Water had to be trucked in because there are no fire hydrants in the neighborhood.

The blaze was brought under control by 7:30 a.m.

The home is a total loss and neighbors stepped in to help the Maixner family. One neighbor offered a nearby five-bedroom home to the family for temporary shelter. The Mile High Chapter of the American Red Cross also sent a disaster response team to help.

A donation fund has been set up for the Maixner family through First Bank in Aspen Park. Any First Bank location will accept a donation. Please let them know it is for the Maixner-Kiley Fund.
