Scrapbooking, Hand-Made Cards Are Latest Craft Craze

Building Scrapbook Can Be Either Expensive Or Cheap Hobby

UPDATED: 3:46 p.m. MST December 11, 2002

It's something you can do with your kids. And it's something you can do to keep the memories of your loved ones alive. It's scrapbooking!

Pam Friis of Memories scrapbook store

Scrapbooking is the latest craze that kids and parents can enjoy together. It involves lots of papers and lots of stickers.

"You can see that she can create pages, just at 12 years old," said beginning scrapbooker Pamela Ricketts.

Whether it holds old family photos of parents, grandparents, wedding pages, or pregnancy pages, a scrapbook is something that friends and families can enjoy too.

"When you open your scrapbooks, you're opening up your family. You're opening up your heart, you're opening up new kind of conversation -- a conversation in a book," said scrapbook expert Pam Friis.

Friis is the store manager at the Memories store near Park Meadows Mall. She works with beginner scrapbookers like Ricketts, who got hooked on the hobby just two months ago.

"If you want it more simple I think you can keep cost down by making it a little more cost effective. But I think you could get very elaborate, have quite a book and spend quite a bit as well," Friis said.

Many scrapbookers save money by sharing tools and scraps with friends.

But no matter how much you spend or don't spend, it's tough to put a price tag on your memories.

If you enjoy scrapbooking, you might also like making your own holiday cards. If the budget is a little tight this Christmas or if you're looking to add a personal touch to your presents, making handmade holiday cards is a perfect solution, Friis said.

More consumers are making cards, gift boxes, and even ornaments.

But, the folks at the Memories scrapbook store said they're seeing quite a few folks making cards that don't fit in envelopes.

"You either purchase your envelopes ahead of time or you can use the die cut machine and you can make (your own) envelopes," Friis said.

To find out how to make paper angels, paper boxes, or sun catchers, check out www.memories.com or call (303) 768-8800.

Walk into the Memories store and tell them you are a Denver's 7 viewer and you'll get a discount.
