JEFFERSON COUNTY, Colo. -- State Highway 6 reopened Sunday morning after a brief chase with a Colorado State Patrol trooper led to a fatal crash.A trooper tried to pull over a 1997 Jeep Cherokee after it was spotted weaving in traffic at 11:23 p.m, said patrol spokesman David Hall. Hall says the man fled from the trooper on U.S. Highway 6.The Jeep, traveling eastbound down Clear Creek Canyon, lost control while it was passing in the westbound lane. The Jeep swerved back into the correct lane, spun and went off right side of the road.
The vehicle shot off the embankment and rolled once, coming to a rest on ice in Clear Creek. Hall said the driver, 26-year-old John Slumski from Federal Heights, Colo., was ejected.Highway 6 was closed for several hours Saturday night. Alcohol is suspected to be a contributing factor and speeds in the chase were reported to be over 40 mph, the State Patrol reports.
