News Sale Settles In

Rocky Ramifications Considered A Loss

POSTED: 5:37 pm MST December 5, 2008

With 29 days left for the ownership of the Rocky Mountain News to find a buyer, some politicos are imagining life as a one-paper town.

"A second newspaper keeps the other newspaper honest," said Mike Rosen.

As both a talk show host for 850 KOA, Rosen has also written conservative columns for both the Denver Post and, now, for the Rocky.

"I also like the idea of those differing viewpoints on the editorial pages. And we're going to lose that," Rosen said.

One concern is that the editorial pages of the Rocky, which tend to be conservative, could be lost as the more liberal views of Poast editors could have more unchecked influence.

"The little bit of competition that goes on with them and, um, just the fact that you have many more people covering the political (world) than you would if it was just one paper," said Pat Waak, chairwoman of the Colorado Democratic Party.

Both outspoken, influential partisan observers hope the newspaper's management can find a way out of this mess, losing nearly 15 million dollars in 2008 alone.

They also acknowledge how much the media landscape has shifted in recent years.

"I have to say I'm one of those people who likes to have my cup of coffee in the morning & read through the paper and....But, in fact, other generations really haven't experienced that," Waak said.

At Newsland in Westminster, they used to carry 150 newspapers from aroung the globe.

In 15 years that number has dropped to one-fifth, 30 remaining papers.

The owner tells 7NEWS he believes ferer people are reading now.

Magazine racks are much smaller in just the past two years, in part because the five pervious locations throughout the metro area are now trimmed to only one store at 92nd and Federal.
