Suspected Shoplifters Run Over Employee's Foot During Escape

Good Samaritans Follow Fleeing Pickup, Phone 911

POSTED: 11:49 am MST December 3, 2008

A Wal-Mart employee was injured when two suspected shoplifters ran over her foot as they were fleeing in a pickup truck.

The off-duty employee was able to pull one of the stolen items out of the pickup before it sped off from the Delta, Colo. store.

Police said two Good Samaritans saw what was happening on Nov. 24 and phoned 911 to report where the pickup was heading.

One of the drivers who called 911 said the pickup nearly hit their vehicle as it raced out of the Wal-Mart parking lot.

Police arrested Julie Skelly, 34, and Dustin Hyatt, 31, both of Grand Junction, on suspicion of theft after they were apprehended at a nearby funeral home.

Witnesses said the pickup pulled into the funeral home parking lot and shut off its lights. The two were arrested on stairs at the back of the building.

Police said the pickup contained more than $2,500 worth of merchandise, including televisions, car stereos, cameras, and cell phones.

Skelly was arrested on suspicion of theft between $500 and $15,000 and violation of bail bond conditions. According to an arrest affidavit obtained by the Montrose Press, she had recently bonded out of jail in Mesa County, where she was accused of possessing a controlled substance with intent to distribute, child abuse and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Hyatt was arrested on suspicion of theft between $500 and $15,000, reckless endangerment, reckless driving and driving while license cancelled or denied.

The two suspects were due in court Wednesday on the charges.

The Wal-Mart employee suffered minor injuries.
