Parents Seek Air Force Payment In Daughter's Sodomy
Cadet Pleads Guilty To Sex With 13-Year-Old

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- The family of a 13-year-old Denver girl
who had a sexual encounter with a cadet is seeking an unspecified
amount of money from the military.
Cadet Robert Ryan Burdge, 22, in February pleaded guilty at a
court-martial to consensual sodomy with a minor and impeding an Air
Force investigation. He was sentenced to two months in prison,
received a dishonorable discharge and was ordered to pay the Air
Force $120,000 for his education.
The family's attorney, Dan Boho, on Tuesday said he was working
on the paperwork for the claim. A claim was filed with the Pentagon
in June, he said.
Burdge, a National Merit Scholar from Hopedale, Ohio, told
jurors he thought the girl was 16 or 17. He met her at a weeklong
sports camp the Air Force Academy hosts every year.
Burdge said he went to the girl's dormitory on June 21, which
was off-limits to men, and escorted her back to his room. There, he
kissed her and received oral sex, an act the military considers
sodomy.
The girl never reported the incident. It came to the academy's attention in October while investigators were looking into another case.
During Burdge's sentencing hearing, Boho and the family thought the prosecution should have made a stronger case, perhaps calling the parents or presenting videotaped testimony by the girl.
The family sent a complaint to academy superintendent Lt. Gen. J.D. Dallager but never heard back.
The letter mistakenly went to the Pentagon, the father learned later.
The girl dropped out of high school after five weeks of classes in the fall because of rumors that she lied during the investigation and was to blame for the incident.
Some of the girl's classmates learned about the incident during the investigation.
