Mountain Towns Fearful Of Economy

Breckenridge Pumping Money Into Marketing

Economic worries have some mountain towns on edge.

The town of Breckenridge is tackling the economy head-on. It’s hosting an economic summit Monday to discuss challenges and how they hope to deal with the down-turn.

For now, the town is pumping $250,000 into marketing.

“Just trying to be proactive and like anybody would with their business just making sure we are taking the appropriate measures to ensure that we have good retail sales and good lodging occupancies,” said John McMahon, executive director of Breckenridge Resort Chamber.

Without that money, the Chamber said the town could see an almost $38 million decline in lodging, retail and restaurant revenue.

Dan Smith, who lives in the metro area but owns a home in Breckenridge, said the economy will definitely change things for his family.

“I think we will probably come up here a little less,” said Smith. “We don't rent our home and maybe we will rent it once or twice during the season. Every little penny helps these days.”

But not everyone is anticipating a bumpy run. Ski and snowboard rental stores all across the Front Range are anticipating a pretty good season because more people are inquiring about rentals this year than typical. The stores believe airlines’ fees may be why.

“It is a win/win proposition for those folks,” said Kim Smith, marketingdDirector of Colorado Ski and Golf. “They don't have to pay the airline baggage fees, they don’t have to schlep the gear through the airports and they arrive at the resort and have their skis ready and waiting for them.”

Colorado Ski and Golf and Rentskis.com are even offering packages to mountain-goers to help business.

For now, the ski resorts wait for more snow, which they hope will translate into more people. But the resorts admit this economic downturn can be good news for Coloradans.

"It’s an opportunity for people in the Front Range and regional areas to have their family vacation at a really value price this year more than any other year," said McMahon.
