A 23-year-old mother and her boyfriend were charged Friday with first-degree murder after her 2-year-old son was scalded to death.

Prosecutors also charged Isela Reyes-Talamantes and John Vigil, 24, with child abuse resulting in death.

Elijah Archuleta died from severe burns, which covered over 75 percent of his body, the coroner said.

Nurses at St. Anthony Central Hospital said when they saw Elijah on Nov. 7, he appeared cold to the touch. He was pronounced dead minutes after he arrived at the hospital.

According to police documents, Reyes-Talamantes and Vigil waited at least 10 hours before seeking help for Elijah.

The couple remains in custody in the Denver County Jail where they are being held without bond. They are scheduled to appear in Denver County Court on Nov. 18 to be formally advised of the charges.
