Denver May Settle Woman's Jail Death For $3 Million

Emily Rice Settlement Still Needs City Council Approval

POSTED: 4:54 pm MST November 13, 2008

The death of a 24-year-old woman inside a jail may cost the city of Denver $3 million.

The city has reached a settlement with the family of Emily Rice. Rice died at the Denver County jail in February 2006.

She had been in a drunken driving accident but doctors at Denver Health Medical Center did not detect several injuries, including her lacerated spleen. And her pleas for help while at the jail were essentially ignored by jail staff, according to court documents.

Two deputies on duty did not follow protocol and then falsified reports, according to Denver's independent monitor, who reviewed the case.

The Denver city council still has to approve the settlement.

Call7 Investigators have learned the settlement includes a series of significant procedural changes at Denver's jail when dealing with inmates.

Rice's family has already settled with Denver Health for $4 million.
