MONTROSE, Colo. -- A 17-year-old Montrose High School student who was attacked in the main school hallway Tuesday was sent home from the hospital Wednesday.Mallory Haulman, a sophomore, suffered a slicing cut to her upper neck when a 14-year-old boy she didn't know grabbed her from behind and tried to cut her throat with what police called a "straight-edged" weapon.A student interviewed by the Denver Post Tuesday said she witnessed the attack.
"He calmly walks up to her and grabbed her by the throat," Paola Gomez told the Post. "He pulled her head back and slit her throat."Gomez told the Post that the injured girl dropped her bags and began screaming, "Oh, my God. Someone help me."The boy ran from the school after the attack, but was caught nearby. He has not been identified because he is a juvenile.Police said they asked the district attorney to prosecute the boy for attempted first-degree murder.Montrose County School District spokeswoman Linda Gann told the Montrose Daily Press that the boy was scheduled to be enrolled in an intervention program on the day of the attack.Counselors were on hand Wednesday for the 1,400 students at Montrose High. About 17 students were kept home from the school, by their parents, as a result of the attack, according to Gann.
